Getting Covered - Who Is Eligible?

To be eligible for insurance under this policy, you must be a resident of Canada and covered under a government health insurance plan.

Applicants age 55 or over need to complete the Medical Questionnaire to determine their eligibility and rate category. However, where the applicant is between 55-74 years of age, travelling for 17 days or less and purchasing the Quick Trip Plan, in which case there is no need to complete the Medical Questionnaire.

Application And Medical Questionnaire for Emergency Medical Insurance

  • Must be completed within 180 days of the effective date.
  • Single-Trip plans must be purchased for the entire duration of the trip that is out of Canada.
  • Single-Trip and Multi-Trip plans, (except for the Quick Trip plan) are available with no age limit.
  • BounceBack Benefit can only be purchased in conjunction with a Single-Trip plan (not applicable to Top-Ups).

If a paper-based application is being used, then the customer must complete and sign the application and return it to us.

Eligibility And Rate Category

At the time of application you must be:

Under Age 55. You automatically qualify for Rate Category A and do not need to complete the medical questionnaire.

Age 55 to 74, travelling 17 days or less and purchasing a Quick Trip Plan. You do not need to answer any medical questions. Under the Quick Trip Plan, you qualify for Rate Category D.

Note: The Quick Trip Plan will not cover:

  • any pre-existing condition for which you have taken, received or been prescribed medication or treatment in the three (3) months before your effective date; and/or
  • Your heart condition if, in the three (3) months before your effective date you have taken, received or been prescribed medication or treatment or you have taken any form of nitroglycerine for the relief of angina pain; and/or
  • Your lung condition if, in the three (3) months before your effective date you have taken, received or been prescribed medication or treatment or you require treatment with oxygen or Prednisone for your lung condition.

Age 55 and over - If you do not care to purchase the Quick Trip Plan and are age 55 and over, you must compete the Medical Questionnaire to determine your eligibility (Step 1) and rate category (Steps 2 and 3).

If you are not eligible to purchase this insurance

If you are 55 or over and are not eligible to purchase this insurance, you can apply for emergency medical coverage under Manulife Financial's Individual Medical Underwriting Plan, by calling 1-877-884-8283 or 519-251-7417. You will need to be able to answer questions related to your health status and will need to know your travel dates in order to receive a quote. This quote will match your specific health needs and circumstances. When you pay the quoted premium, your pre-existing conditions will be covered during your trip under the Individual Medical Underwriting Plan.

Premiums And Savings

There are many ways to save on travel insurance, including:

  • Family Coverage
  • Travel Companion Savings
  • Travel Canada Savings
  • Deductibles

Premiums:

  • Premium rate is in $CDN per person.
  • Emergency Medical Family Coverage rates are 2x the premium rate for the oldest traveler under age 55.
  • Rates are subject to change without notice.
  • Premium due is based on:
    1. The plan purchased;
    2. The rate category; and
    3. The age at the time of application.
  • Number of coverage days for Single-Trip plans must include:
    1. The date of departure;
    2. The date of return; and
    3. The number of days in between.
  • Coverage will not take effect if the applicant's method of payment is not honoured.

  • The date you leave home; or the departure date as shown on the confirmation.

  • when the number of days of coverage purchased expires; or
  • on the expiry date as shown on the confirmation.
Single-Trip All-Inclusive For Trip Cancellation coverage, when you pay the premium for this insurance.

For all other coverages, when you leave home to begin your trip.
For Trip Cancellation, when you leave home.

For all other coverages, on the earliest of these dates:
  • the date you return home, or when the trip ends or is cancelled;
  • when the number of days of coverage purchased expires; or
  • on the expiry date as per the confirmation.
Multi-Trip Emergency Medical On the effective date as shown on the confirmation; after that date, it starts each date you leave home. On the earliest of these dates:
  • the date you return home or when your trip ends;
  • when the number of days of coverage purchased expires; or
  • on the expiry date as shown on the confirmation.
Multi-Trip All-Inclusive For Trip Cancellation coverage, when you purchase your prepaid trip and you have already purchased this insurance.

For all others, coverage starts on the effective date as shown on the confirmation; after that date, it starts each date you leave home.
For Trip Cancellation, when you leave home or when your trip is cancelled.

For other coverages, on the earliest of these dates:
  • the date you return home or when your trip ends;
  • when the number of days of coverage purchased expires; or
  • on the expiry date as shown on the confirmation.
Trip Cancellation/Interruption At the time you purchase this insurance. When you return home or when your trip ends or is cancelled.
Top-Ups On the effective date as shown on the confirmation. On the earliest of these dates:
  • the date you return home;
  • when the number of days of coverage purchased expires; or
  • on the expiry date as shown on the confirmation.

Refunds And Extensions

  • You may cancel this insurance at any time before its effective date.
  • If you return home early, you can apply for a refund of the premium (minimum $25.00) for the unused coverage providing there has been no claim reported or initiated against the policy and that you have mailed your written refund request within 5 days of your return, along with proof of the date you actually returned home.
  • All travellers insured under the same policy must return together for a refund to be possible.

Refunds and Cancellations are not permitted on the BounceBack Benefit, Trip Cancellation/Interruption, All-Inclusive and Multi-Trip All-Inclusive plans.

Extensions:

Extensions are available if, at the time you apply for an extension, you have not had an event that resulted in or may result in a claim and if your trip, including the extension, does not exceed 183 days (212 days for residents of Ontario or Newfoundland). Minimum premium of $25 will apply.
